I’m on vacation this week – thus the absence (but I thought that I’d make one little post). Fortunately, I’ve been able to lie around and read a lot (one of the great luxuries I miss in my busy life right now). Anyhow, I picked up And a Bottle of Rum: A History of the New World in Ten Cocktails by Wayne Curtis, who’s stories of pirates of the Caribbean make Johnnie Depp look like a real wuss. There is so much fascinating information about rum in here, that I’ll have to make a post just for that. But for the meantime – please enjoy this recipe – which might be the first rum cocktail ever created. The drink is called the Bumboo and its first written account is from a letter dated 1664.
Bumboo (aka Bombo)
2 ounces of rum (dark or light)
1 teaspoon sugar
1 ounce of water
top with a dash of nutmeg
Stir until sugar is dissolved and add ice (although pirates in the tropics didn’t have that luxury). Enjoy!
